According to the US Geological Service, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 struck southern Turkey close to the Syrian border, causing buildings to collapse and sending shockwaves over northwest Syria, Cyprus, and Lebanon. At least 221 people were killed and 419 injured in northwest Syria, with hundreds remaining trapped under the rubble, according to the White Helmets group, the Syria Civil Defence operating in the area. El balance conjunto de muertos tras el terremoto que azotó a Turquía y Siria este lunes ascendió a 2.300 fallecidos.
Según la Autoridad de Gestión de Desastres y Emergencias (AFAD) de Turquía, los sismos dejaron en ese país 1.498 muertos y al menos 8.533 heridos.
Hay contabilizados 2.834 edificios derrumbados, lo que hace temer un número aún mayor de víctimas. Además en Siria se han contabilizado 800 muertos.
